I recently stayed at the fairly new (opened in November 2009) Indigo Hotel in Chelsea, NYC and was pleasantly surprised. This boutique hotel is nestled between 6th & 7th avenue near FIT and Chelsea's "flower district". Although walking in this neighborhood at night seems a bit suspect, it's probably its only draw back. A MTA stop is right on the corner and this 122 room hotel is within walking distance (on a nice day) to Times Sq., Broadway, and the Chelsea Flea Market on Sundays. The room rates are reasonable which is a relative term when talking about NYC hotel room rates, on a weekend it will most likely cost you between $240-$280 per night with advanced purchase. I would venture to guess that the more popular this hotel becomes the more expensive the prices will be.
The hotel provides free wifi in each room; any hotel that does not provide this amenity is not worth a repeat visit. Instead of using the traditional card access system to the rooms, Indigo employs something reminiscent of a proximity key system. Like everything else in NYC the room itself is extremely small. The bathrooms are modern, chic but with a little twist of impracticality: the shower is only partially covered with glass, therefore, when you take a shower water ends up all over the floor no matter how careful you are. The bed and pillows were comfortable, and sitting up to watch their LCD TV's was no bother on the back. Did I mention that the hotel also has a rooftop bar? I didn't visit because it was 20 degrees outside when I visited. Nevertheless, if ever I'm in the area again for another Broadway performance I will be revisiting if the rates are still affordable.
The hotel has a rewards program that is worth looking into. Please visit their website for more information. Happy travels!
